Columbia August 16th 1868 Dear Sir Your favour of the 14th Inst was received too late to answer by return mail finding an opportunity privately to write you I hasten to answer your enquiries, after making the enquiry of several persons in this place I learn that a coloured man by the name of Ben Watson resided in Cumberland County near this place untill after the fall of Richmond he left his Former Master either in the year of 1865, or 1866, and whent either to Alexander Va, or Washington City D,C he was formaly own by Mr William L. Toler who sold him to a Gent. by the name of Abe. Carter Both residents of Cumberland County Post Office Columbia Fluvanna County Virginia for any further Information in refferance to Ben, whereabouts I would advise you to write either to Mr Wm L.
