deep interest in the arrest and punishment of the persons engaged in this most nefarious and cruel outrage upon the peace and quiet of this county.

I labored under the impression any so cold every person, with whom I conversed upon the subject that in my county we were getting on admirably with the coloured in population, that the whole white population was disposed to treat them with humanity and forbearance. While this opinion was entertained by myself and others who compose the best portion of our people, this most foul unmanly and cruel crime, a crime that shocks human nature itself, is committed in our midst with a deliberation and malice prepense, that makes every good citizen look in the face of his neighbors and ask himself whether or not he is living in a civilized community. I do not liken that another four men can be found in the county so dead to every [[?]] of humanity and shame. If this is true it is the more incumbent upon all good citizens to free this community from such bad men.

Yours Respectfully
