Captain,

I send you enclosed two copies of a recent Circular with reference to Contracts. You will at once see the propriety and necessity of it, if not objectionable to you, and in order to accommodate the Planters of your County, I would be pleased if you would assume the duty of approving and attending to such Contracts for Lunenburg County, and thus obviate the necessity of coming to the function. It would be a great accomodation to your people, and I think they would appreciate it, should you undertake the task, You will also find enclosed a Circular authorizing you to assume the duty. If However you should think proper to decline attending to it. Please inform me to that effect, as soon as possible. In asking you to undertake the duty, I am well aware that it is an unthankful and in many cases an extremely, unpleasant one, that it will not tend to increase your popularity among a certain class, as you will often have occasion to, reject entirely, or suggest amendments to Contracts, which if enforced, would, in your opinion be injurious to the interests of the Freedmen, However Capt, these matters are
