I have the honor to apply for the position of Clerk at Howard Grove Hospital with the hope that my application may be granted.

I am an ex U.S. Soldier, and from August 1865, until June 1867, have been clerking in the A. A.G. office.  Dept. of Virginia and 1st Mil. Dist. and would refer you to Col. S. T. Chalfin for good character and reliability.

I have also been a prisoner of War in Richmond, Va. for two months in 1864 and suffered all the hardships and privations usually inflicted upon Union prisoners.
