Colonel:
I have the honor to report the occurrence of a riot, between whites and Blacks, at Lunenburg Court House on the 13th instant, the result of which, so far as known, is one colored man killed and a number severely wounded, one of whom it is expected will die. Although the County Court was in session at the time and the majority of the officers of the County were on the spot, no notice whatever has been taken of the matter by the Civil Authorities, with the exception of the arrest and binding to the peace of one colored man. I have therefore issued warrants for the arrest of the parties known to have been concerned in the riot and would respectfully ask instructions to govern my action in the premises. The Examination will be held on Monday next, 20th instant, the Sheriff of the County reports that a being the earliest date at which he can have all the parties present, and, if practicable, I would be glad to have the assistance of another officer in making the investigation.
I am, Colonel
Very respectfully your obed't Serv't
