I have the honor respectfully to apply to you for an increase of salary, and submit for your information the following statement upon which the application is made.

Board for self and wife and three sons per month    $75.00
Services of Laundress per month   6.00
Private tuition for three sons per month    8.00
Rev. tax on Salary per month     .83 
Total expenses per month    $89.83

The above is a correct statement and you will perceive General, that from a salary of one hundred dollars per month, after deducting expenses, how meagre the margin for "incidentals," and how barren the prospect for a "rainy day."
