"436" Bureau Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands Head Quarters 1st Sub-District, Va. Norfolk, Va., Nov 13th 1868 Bvt Brig Genl O. Brown Asst Comm. BRF and AL Dist of Va Richmond, Va General.- I have the honor to request instructions as to the disposition to be made, under Cir No 8 C.S from your Hd Qrs of "Craney Island" now borne on the Return of Abandoned Lands for this Sub Dist as formerly owned by the United States, There is nothing on record at these Hd Qrs to show by what Dep't of the Gov't this property was formerly held. I am General Very Respectfully Your Obt Servant J.H. Remington Sub Asst Comm. 1st Sub Dist of Va The island is required for defensive purposes and the Government should continue to hold it in possession. A.A. Humphrey Brig. Genl. of Engineers Commanding B.B. 23/957 Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands - Upon the foregoing statement of the Chief of Engineers that the title to Craney Island is vested in the U.S. and that it is required for defensive purposes, it will be turned over to the Engineer Department.
