Having been appealed to by an old family servant for advice, I have concluded, upon reflection, that the most probable means of obtaining justice would be a statement of the case to you. With your permission, I will state the facts as briefly as I can. The servant to whom I have alluded, is a worthy colored woman, and in her days of slavery she obtained a good education for a slave. She learned to read and write, & was in many respects well qualified to make a teacher of persons of her own race. From all I can learn, and from my acquaintance with her
