to visit & aid the said school. He engaged to pay up monthly, & but for this & other promises Mrs. Johnson would have quit teaching at once. Relying on the word of Mr. Hopkins, she taught thirty-one scholars for two months and never received one cent. She has walked to Charlottesville, a distance of twelve miles, three times, to see the provost-marshal & has failed to receive pay. It is to her a matter of serious importance. She has left her own family day after day to teach this school, relying on these officers for the fulfilment of their promises & but for their encouragement would not have undertaken the school. Her scholars progressed rapidly and she would be glad to continue the school.
