On arriving there at the time and day fixed upon, I was met at the Depot by Mr. A. S. Wilson, who informed me, that he greatly regreted, that he had taken any action in the matter — that there were no witnesses in the case, except the Colored man referred to in his Affidavit, and he, was employed in a distant part of the County. That he could not substantiate the charges made, except by this witness; and for himself, would like to have the matter smothered up, as he was satisfied that the charges could not be sustained. In the presence of reliable Gentlemen, he requested me to report to Genl. Schofield "that there was nothing in it", and thus dispose of the case. I informed those Gentlemen, that the matter could not be disposed of in the manner proposed, that an investigation had been called for, and it was my duty to proceed with the examination of witnesses, if any positive and reliable evidence could be furnished. Finding it impossible to proceed with the examination on that date
