Headquarters, District of Texas.
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands.
OFFICE, A. A Q. M. AND DISBURSING OFFICER

Austin, Texas. May 2nd 1868.

Major General O. O. Howard.
Commis Bu R. F. & A. L.
Washington D. C.

General:
I have the honor to respectfully request that I may be transferred for duty in the Bureau to the State of Virginia or adjacent thereto. My reasons for desiring the change, are that my wife and family are residents of New York State, and the former being in ill health, it is impossible for her to undergo the journey to this State. The purport of my latest letters from home would seem to demand my presence there, and as I am in a position to resign, I would earnestly and respectfully request that this application may be granted.

Very Respectfully
Your obdt servt
Wm A. Smith.
