The "Poorhouse" is to them a place of horrors, and many of them will die in their cold rooms rather than go there  But to be frank I am of the opinion that a certain per cent of the colored race must die in a short time  The relations existing between them and the whites are of such a character that nothing can change this result  The masses of the whites estimate the negro as but little above the brutes; consequently the promptings of humanity are not made beneficial to this race of men and never will be in the South

The colored schools are quite active this season: An impetus seems to have been given to these institutions that must result in permanent good to the rising generation and make the future of the negro much more hopeful than could be the case were he to remain in ignorance  Although but a small per cent of colored children are attending school, still hundreds of competent teachers are being prepared
