Sir,
I have been requested by the signed to transmit to you the accompanying Petition, in behalf of retention of Col John W Jordan at this Post.

In executing the above request, I think it propper and due to truth to say, that the signee of this "Petition", comprise the most respectable, intelligent and well informed portion of our colored resident population. All the leading men among them, have cordially and cheerfully united in the effort to keep Col Jordan in his present position and if time permitted, the number of signatures could be largely increased.

We hope that if not uncompatible with your apprehension of duty and the public interest; the "Petition" may be favorably considered.
