This. Argument made and entered into this 18th day of September 1866 between John H. Tabb and Baylor Thornton, both of the County of Gloucester and State of Virginia. Witnesseth -

That the said John H. Tabb has rented the said Baylor Thornton for the term of five years, commencing from the first (1st.) day of January next that piece of land opposite to the dwelling at Back Creek and containing according to the survey of Henry Hughes twenty one (21) acres, on the following conditions.

Namely, the said Baylor Thornton agrees and hereby binds himself to pay the said Tabb yearly, for the aforementioned twenty one acres of land, forty two dollars, to be paid quarterly - to build at his own expense a good single story framed house, to put a good fence on the land between the said twenty one acres, and the other land of said Tabb. The said Tabb to haul half the rails - The said Thornton further agrees to manure yearly a portion of the land, and to put on the land other houses for his own use and at his own expense and for all such houses so put with the exception of the dwelling, the said Baylor Thornton reserves the right to move off, by or before the expiration of his lease provided the same be framed houses otherwise he has no right to remove them. It is further understood and agreed to by the parties to this agreement that the said Baylor Thornton is not to cut his firewood on the Back Creek Estate, but the said J.H. Tabb has no objection to his picking up any wood that may be down and burning it. In obligation and performance of all contained in this Contract we do hereunto affix our names and seals this date first herein mentioned
