testified that he had intended to try to get a gun or pistol from Dr Taliaferro with which to defend himself in case he should be again attacked on the road, but Dr. Taliaferro was not at home, and being afraid to trust himself on the Road that night without arms, he returned to Gloucester C.H. where the residents had returned, but he borrowed a pistol and with it, he and Bland went home.
Tabb, also said that he had made up his mind, in case he was attacked on his way home, to shoot, if he could. He was not again interfered with that night. Young Bland, who appeared to be a most unwilling witness, and who left the county and went to King and Queen Co, for purposes of avoiding the appearance as a witness, (as I was informed) testified that Baylor Thornton at one time said to Tabb that he, Baylor, would "walk on him if he chose." The two women, who were the wives of John and Baylor, were, nevertheless, allowed to testify as witnesses. They both said that they had never heard a word about the matter, but that they had gone along home with their husbands quietly. No other evidence was offered by the accused except their wives.
