claiming that he was innocent of charges made against him, and that he had offered to me all the money which he had received. This he knows to be false. -- He, and many persons in this community know that after the charges were made, and after his dismissal from office, and after a peremptory demand from me, for all public monies in his hands, he through counsel, paid me $74, this in excess of any amounts offered to me previously. I can also prove that he (Dawson) attempted to collect a larger amount, and his eagerness alone, excited the suspicion of the gentleman, that it was not proper to pay it to him. Dawson made the remark before he left, that he had satisfied Mr. Smith of his innocence. Is it not strange! How difficult it must have been, for him to have convinced Smith of his innoncence. I have seen prisoners before Smith, for violation of the revenue laws, with the direct positive evidence of undoubted witnesses fastening the crime on them. I have seen these prisoners, admit that they had committed the actsalledged against them, and I have heard Smith the pious, praying Radical Assessor say he could not find them guilty, and could not punish them by forfeiture of property.
I have know of Smith saying (in my presence) that he believed a certain prisoner guilty, and that he deserved severe punishment after an hours conversation with said prisoner, Smith becomes security for his release and said prisoner, has since that time been a hard Radical. Said prisoner would steal before the war. Do you doubt, that Dawson satisfied Smith of his innocence. If Dawson will call on me I will give him a certificate, signed by two thirds of the voters of Montgomery county, that I believe him fully qualified for a boot black for Smith or Ben Butler. More some day.
M. J. GOODRICH.
