I have the honor to ask permission to rent a building of one room of Q.S. Smith of Marion Va. to be used as a School House for Freedmen, Rent to commence Oct 1st 1868 Price $15.00/100 per month.
The teacher did not arrive in Marion untill the middle of October and a permanent building was not obtained untill this month. I have however been obliged to become personally responsible for $15.00/100 repairs, and a stove and the extra time asked is more than needed twice over to repay me, I am obliged from the prejudice to pay double what any one else would, the present price includes the wood!
I have no idea that the Freedmen can any more than pay the
