Christiansburg Va. November 30th 1868.

Bv't Brig. Genl. H.G. Thomas U S A,
Sub Asst. Commissioner

General,

I have the honor to request permission to rent the building occupied by the Freedmen School, taught by Miss Rachel Dennis at Salem Roanoke Co. Va. at $15 00 per month, to date from December 1st 1868. The Building is 20 x 30 feet, with 12 feet ceiling and is owned by the Freedmen of Salem and vicinity. They are however very much in debt, both for the Lot and Building, and need assistance in helping to pay off their indebtedness. The Scholars pay the Teachers's Board, fuel and lights, but are unable to pay anything for rent of the building. The School numbers 70 Scholars, and is in charge of a Teacher commissioned by the Friends Freedmen Asso. of Philadelphia Pa.

Very Respectfully Your Ob't Servant
