See if a Black Trunk marked Sarah Stuart or Stewart is at the office of the Baltimore Steamboat.

If it has been taken away, trace it up and send to my care by tomorrow's boat if possible. - Answer

Sir,
The following statement is referred to you for your information and prompt action.

Fred'k. Ross (cold.) of Powhaton Co., Va., states as follows - viz: That three weeks before Xmas, Joe Palmer (white) came to my house and said that he had lost a yearling, and asked me to let him search my house, which I refused unless he had a search warrant. - Palmer asked me if I had any beef in my house -

I answered, yes I had beef there, that I bought last night from a wagon coming towards Richmond. I bought half a beef, it was small, paid $3 for it - Palmer went off and got a search warrant and came back with a constable and took the beef away, and took me to Jail. I was in jail four days, and gave security to appear at March term of Court. Three weeks after my arrest Palmer had my son in law arrested and put in jail for the same affair. He was released on bail to appear at March term of Court. Ross further states, that I owned Clayborn Wilborn $45 for rent, that the day before I was taken to jail I offered Willborne a due bill of Dr. John Nash for $50, which he would not receive. I then promised to let him have 2½ bbls of corn, and more, when the Dr. said one, that while I was in jail John Moore son in law of Clayborn Wilborn went to my house and took about 11 bbls of corn.- He informed me after I got out of jail that he had only taken 5 bbls. - I appealed to the Civil Authorities at Powhaton C.H., Mr Davis & Geo. Taylor - they declined having anything to do with the case.

Sir,
You will make some arrangement whereby you can attend on certain days at Powhaton C.H. to hear whatever cases require your attention in that County, and see that the Freedmen are notified of the days on which you will be there.

Respectfully
