"Little Scotland" Estate on Hampton Creek.

I observe that there is no date to the instrument. This informality can be amended by an addition to the last clause, using the words, "this ... day of ... 1868" as may be directed by you β€” so that your copy, as probably there is an duplicate shall correspond with the original.

I also observe that the form of attestation to the corporate seal is very unusual. The words are β€” "signed on behalf of the American Missionary Association, by the Clerk of its Executive Committee and by its Asst. Treasurer, who affixes the corporate seal of said Association by authority of said Executive Committee"β€” The signatures of these officers appear with the corporate seal.

The constitution does not mention either a Clerk of the Executive Committee or an Assistant Treasurer. No one of the corporate officers mentioned in Section VI, signs the instrument. The mode of signing corporate instruments and of using the corporate seal is of course one which could be, and may have been, provided for by By-laws; and the present mode may be perfectly regular. As however I have no copy of the By-laws, and have no information which will enable me to understand the unusual mode of the execution of the instrument, I write by Genl Brown's direction to request an explanation from you on that subject.

Yours respectfully
