McMahon, Freedmen School teacher at Appomattox C.H. in reference to acts of violence committed by the "Ku Klux Klan" and forwarded by you has been received at these Hd. Qrs. In reply the Bvt. Brig. Genl. Asst. Comr. desires me to say, that you will instruct the freedmen to prepare themselves for their own protection against these lawless acts, and if molested by these, or any other, bands in the manner related, to defend themselves like free men, and the law and the power of this Government will sustain them in their defending their lives and liberties. These instructions must not be construed to mean that the colored man may offer violent resistance without just provocation or in any manner excite an attack. 97 Very respectfully Will A.
