Dear Germain:

We had the visit of MR. MARSHALL FIELD, who came in to look at the GIOTTO.

He asked me if I had anything else to show him and I suggested our very fine RAEBURN, but he said that though he had bought several pictures of that school a few years ago, he was now interested in the 19th Century school. However, so far he only has a RENOIR which he has just gotten from Knoedlers and which he exchanged against two pictures he had.

I showed him our SEURAT "Eiffel Tower", our LAUTREC, CEZANNE, RENOIR, and RENOIR Drawing. It came out then that he had no money these days and was not at all thinking of buying anything. However, there is no doubt that this man will come back with a tremendous buying power and it is to be remembered that he is very much more like a European collector than anyone I have met here before, and was delighted at my suggestion to notify him whenever we received paintings of the 19th Century French school.
