In a personal letter, René is writing to you regarding the surprising interest this woman has taken in the S. Collection. I consider this as far-reaching because even if we could not conclude this deal, what would prevent us from making a choice of five or six pictures in Europe this Spring or Summer, and interesting Mrs.J. in them, on the same basis as for the S. Collection?

VAN GOGH in ESSEN: If you have any good contacts in Germany, please bear in mind that "Portrait of a young man with a felt hat" which is in the Essen Museum, and which I have been told months ago might perhaps be purchased, on account of Nazi feelings. It is worthwhile following up this matter closely.
perhaps they would consider an exchange for a GERMAN picture - ? CRANACH - COCHRAN ?

If you want to have an important exhibition of 19th century paintings this Fall, I have prepared a list of pictures that we could borrow - all of them being for sale, of course, - and which would form an exhibition that would knock Mr.Bigno and even Mr.Rosenberg cold --- but then absolutely cold!!!

I am adding these lines, hoping that by miracle they will reach you on Friday morning, March 15th, although I fear they will reach you too late for what they are referring to:

BARON VITTA SALE: I was quite surprised to find that there in only one breath-taking work in this little sale.(#12)

- It will be interesting, however, to see for which price the DELACROIX water color sells, as I consider ours to be better.

- #4, by INGRES, shows more of the weaknesses of the artist than his qualities.

- On the other hand, #5 is indeed a very fine picture, and similar in some ways to the one which was in the Béhague Collection
