My dear Germain:-

When I came back to the office after the departure of your boat, I found the letter from Mr. Edgell, copy of which is attached hereto.

This goes to proves, alas, once more that we must have important pictures.

I am just now calling Mr.Rowe in Providence, to find out if MRS.DANFORTH is back - and if so, I will try to show her this picture together with the Degas "Courses".

I will try to talk to Edgell and see if the man would spend $50,000. for a SEURAT. If I get a favorable answer we could then see what could be done with the pictures of Gotz, Koller, Signac.

Maybe you could try and see Signac and attempt to get a price for his picture - although you know that he has always been opposed to the idea of selling.

I shall write today to TURNER in London to see if something can be done with the Seurat owned by the later ROGER FRY.

I am reminding you of the different questions I mentioned on the boat:

a) See MORANGE for his MANET. You have a fiche concerning this in your file.

b) See the RENOIR "Little boy" at HESSELL, and eventually obtain it on consignment.

c) See GEORGES BERNHEIM - he lives now in rue DOSNE. Eventually you may obtain his Ce'zanne "Alley of trees" if he wants a very low price for it. Of course, we should only taje the picture on consignment, and not buy it.

BIGNOU: Clyfford Trever has just this moment come in with the catalogue of the Bignou show. There are eight pictures in the exhibition, all of them first-quality and very saleable, except for the SEURAT which is not a very interesting subject. It is the picture which was the property of [[strikethrough]] Felix Fénéon [[/strikethrough]] KOLLER xx and which Bignou probably has bought.

Clyfford tells me that the exhibition was not yet opened but as he went into the gallery he saw EDGELL - who was brought in by MARIE STERNER - and Edgell was in front of the Large Renoir, raving about it and saying to Mr.Bignou that he wanted Professor SACHS to see this Renoir.

You see, therefore, unfortunately, that Mr.Bignou has a start that we have taken 10 years to built up!
