When in Vienna I saw another version Kunsthistorisches called Antonello da Messina — both interesting in comparison to the one sold to Detroit. However, the Viennas are together with a male portrait by Antonello are private loans (both about the size of the one we had) — I was inable to get photos or to find out who owned them. But perhaps they are for sale! In Vienna: Czernin: was unable under any ruse to get in. The Vermeer is now reported sold to Duveen for $1,100,000. Harrach: Many of the better pictures can be bought. I have the catalogue at home. Shatzker: Went to see the Lawrence "Metternich" — he is asking £3,500. It is not as fine or as brilliant as ours, but needs cleaning & would be improved.
