Mr. Germain Seligmann,
3 E. 51st St.,
New York, N. Y.

Dear Mr. Seligmann:

Fearless, outspoken, clear thinking Thomas Mann, Germany's foremost man of letters, denouncing Naziism and all that it implies, has renounced the home of his ancestors, his honors and his fortune for a life in exile.

To pay tribute to this great liberal speaker and writer, the American Committee for Christian German Refugees is planning a dinner in his honor at the Hotel Astor on Monday evening, May 9, 1938.

Will you join me on the Honorary Committee sponsoring this unusual event. The speakers will include some of the country's most eloquent orators and already acceptances have been received from Hon. James G. McDonald, Miss Dorothy Thompson and Dr. Robert W. Searle. I can assure you that the occasion will prove a memorable one, for Dr. Mann's speech alone will be of absorbing interest in view of the recent developments abroad.

I trust you will see fit to accept this invitation which entails no obligation whatever. With thanks for your cooperation.

Sincerely yours,

Henry Woodburn Chase
Harry Woodburn Chase
Chairman

P.S. At the function a Golden Book of Remembrance is to be presented to Dr. Mann. May I therefore ask you to record if possible in your letter of acceptance, your personal tribute to our Guest of Honor.
