Dear Friends:

The battle-lines are extending and you and I are in it - whether we like it or not! The annexation of Austria, the intensification of discrimination in Poland, Rumania and Germany menace the well-being and security of Jews everywhere.

Let's be perfectly frank about such matters. You and I know that if we permit the Jews of Europe to crack under oppression and accept the status of second-class human beings, there will be repercussions that we prefer not to think about.

The Joint Distribution Committee makes no pretensions to solving the problem. What we are doing however, is of extraordinary significance. We are bringing the means of life to tens of thousands, aiding great numbers to become self-supporting in their own countries, and assisting many others to emigrate and establish themselves abroad. Equally important is the fact that we have been able to sustain the morale of an entire people subject to inhuman pressure.

I feel I have said enough. Please respond quickly and generously in the enclosed envelope. Do it now when funds are urgently needed.

Sincerely yours,

Edward M. M. Warburg
