Dear Germain:

As you may have heard, I have assumed the Chairmanship of the 1938 Greater New York Campaign of the Joint Distribution Committee. In this work I am associated with Governor Lehman, Paul Beerwald and Henry Ittleson.

The daily press brings all too vividly to our attention the growing crisis that faces the Jews of the world. It becomes no longer a question of charity but a mandate to the Jews in America to do their utmost to enable these unfortunates to face life not only with courage but with hope.

It is only some trick of fate that has placed most of us on this side of the Atlantic and it is only natural that they over there should turn to us over here for help, counsel and encouragement. We cannot turn a deaf ear to the desperate pleas for help radiating from abroad.

The Joint Distribution Committee has over a period of the last two decades been a leading force in the rehabilitation and retraining of Jews, in Poland, Roumania, and many other East European countries, and more recently in Germany, as well as in refugee centers. This year we are seeking to raise a national quota of $5,100,000, the minimum needed to carry on our work oversees.

I am sure we can count on your cooperation and your support, because if these serious problems are not handled intelligently and generously, I hate to think of the repercussions not only abroad but on these shores as well.

Please let me hear from you,

Sincerely yours,

Eddie
