Dear Mr. Barbirolli:

When you so kindly asked me last Monday night, to be your guest on Sunday the Eighth, I spontaneously accepted, as for some unknown reason I thought it would be an evening performance.

I see now that you are going to conduct in the afternoon, and am indeed sorry not to be able to attend, as I have already accepted going to the country that day.

I am very disappointed, as it would have given me a great deal of pleasure to see you conduct "Pelleas and Melisande" of which I am particularly fond.

With renewed thanks and regrets, I am,

Yours very sincerely,

(Germain Séligmann)
