My dear Germain -

I waited to reply to your most kind letter of last week asking me to lunch with you before you go West, as I had hoped to be able to arrange it as I would as much like to have seen you. I very much regret however that I shall not be able to manage it as my Brother and Sister-in-law arrived unexpectedly yesterday and will be here; and also my Daughter-in-law Jane Holmes is coming in from Lucerne tomorrow to attend to some business matters for her and Jay. So it rather looks as if the family were pre-empting every moment for the next four days.
