THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Comrades of the First Division:--
It is with deep regret that your Executive Committee announces the decision not to have a reunion in 1942. The reasons are manifest. Most of our comrades travel in automobiles and may attend the American Legion Convention with their posts. The war restrictions on travel make our attendance impossible

This issue of the Bridgehead Sentinel is to preserve our custom of sending a greeting and giving our veterans news of the Division. The war has aroused the old desire to serve. However, tired and anxious to come home, you were after the armistice, your pride and loyalty gave you fortitude to maintain your reputation for duty and discipline. I urge you to let that same fortitude sustain you when you are equally anxious to go and cannot. Now, that you see a new generation of young men like you were in 1917, going forth to fight a new war, it is like you want to go with them. No doubt wisely, the government has decided not to use the veterans of the World War I at the present time, with few exceptions. Conditions may yet require your service. In the meantime, your example of patriotism and your activity in useful organization at home must be an important contribution to the country's effort. Many are doing most commendable work with defense and welfare needs.

Your reward for courage, endurance and fighting power must make your successors feel that they can do no less. With such a spirit, the victory of our arms is again assured.

With good wishes for each one of you, I am,

Faithfully your friend,
(SGD) C. P. SUMMERALL.
