BILLETS
It was a novel sensation to American troops to be billeted among the inhabitants of the many tiny farming villages. Barracks or camps would have formed an inviting target for enemy aircraft. Each house had its quota posted up beside the door, and, being house and barn in one, there was generally room for one officer, forty men in the hay loft and eight horses in the stable.
-December 1917.

Notes From The Branches

New England Branch:
The Officers and members of the N.E. Branch send greetings to the National Society. We are proud to report that we have many First Division Veterans serving on the home front with civilian defense, such as air raid wardens, auxiliary police, observers, etc., and also several of the boys are back in the service.

It was just a year ago that we of the N.E. Branch had the good fortune to watch our old division pass in review at Fort Devens, Mass., and believe me, it made our hearts beat just a little faster as our old Regimental Colors passed by with their battle streamers flowing in the breeze.

I feel sure that when the invasion of Europe is started, the present First Division will carry into battle that same courage and high state of morale that exemplified it as outstanding in 1917-1918. We were and still are the vanguard of them all, therefore the First must once again pick up the torch and light the way for others to follow.
(Signed) HENRY J. GROGAN, Secretary.

Rochester Branch of New York:
On the 18th day of July 1942 this branch held a picnic in honor of the Soissons engagement, at Van Vorhees Lake Ontario Cottage, and a fine gathering of First Division men was the result.

So far three of our members are back in the Service. Bill Emerson, City Cooperation Counsel, who was attached to the 28th Infantry, is now a Colonel. Storrs Barrows, a leading Architect and a Reservist is in the service, and Wesley Meyers of the Supply Company, 5th Field Artillery has enlisted again. Most of the rest of us are in Defense Work and so far looks like that it will be our bit unless things get worse.

Willing at all times to assist in the best possible manner, we are ready, and good wishes to all of our Branches in any effort they may undertake.

(Signed) CHARLES E. DOYLE, Secretary.

Chicago Branch:
First Division Cantigny Post 556 continues to operate as the Chicago Branch, Society of the First Division, A. E. F.

Several of our members have rejoined the Army for service in this war.
