July 9, 1946

Dear Mr. Seligman:

Upon receipt of your cable in reference to automobile insurance, I contacted Macomber & Company. They told me right away that they did not believe that such insurance could be effected, but that nevertheless, they would contact all the insurance companies they represented. Later on in the day they called me back saying that, in spite of all their efforts, they were unable to place such cover, all underwriters agreeing that, since the car was rented in Jamaica and apparently the property of a resident of that island, existing regulations prevented them from issuing a policy.

Today on receipt of your letter of July 6th, I made, in this respect, various further efforts in your behalf, again with Macomber, and afterwards directly with various insurance companies; and in every instance, after explaining the situation, I was told that no such policy could be issued in New York. Even the Automobile Club, whom I contacted, gave me the same answer suggesting, as by the way all other parties did, to effect coverage directly in Kingston.

Rosenwald remitted check of $3,000.-- in further payment on account of his purchase of the BRAQUE and PICASSO. As you will remember, they were supposed to pay the whole balance due of $3,800.-- at the beginning of July, but they promised Mr. Georges that final settlement would be made on or around the 18th of July.

Count Gnoli: a Mrs. Crane delivered to us two framed embroideries which Count Gnoli had given to her husband in Rome for delivery to us. Mr. Georges told me to put these items in my safe and to take the matter up with you this coming September. He had exchanged some correspondence with Count Gnoli on this topic, and I entered them in our insurance records for $500.-, which is the equivalent of 50,000 lire as stated by Gnoli.

Refund - excess baggage charge: I received a card today from TWA, dated July 8th, saying that the matter has their best attention. Furthermore, that a reasonable amount of time will be necessary to bring your request to a conclusion. I shall follow this matter up.

With best wishes,
O.A. Liechti

I cannot understand that in spite of my instructions no return envelope was enclosed w/ M. Georges letter. I very emphatically repeated your order & I am certain such omission will not reoccur.
