COPY OF THE LETTER FROM MR. RICHARDSON OF DETROIT, dated June 16th., 1947:

"Dear Mr. Seligman: I was unable to get in touch with you after I got back to Detroit before your departure and hope that you have a pleasant and profitable stay abroad. paragraph. In the meanwhile the question of the Delacroix is rendered most complicated by the fact that our Board does not like to have more than one donor's name connected with a single gift. In other words, we have a gift of a certain amount of money from Mr. Whitcomb; we cannot throw in some duplicate works of art given us in the past by other people to accomplish a purchase. The purchase must be, according to the present policy of the Board, the gift of a single donor. The matter isn't settled yet, however, and I will let you know what happens.""

COPY OF THE REPLY TO MR. RICHARDSON, dated June 18th., 1947:

"Dear Mr. Richardson: In the absence of Mr. Germain Seligman, I have opened your letter of the 16th. paragraph. I shall be writing to Mr. Seligman by airmail today, and as I know he is most anxious to do everything possible to enable you to acquire the DELACROIX painting, I will, of course, enclose a copy of your note. paragraph. Perhaps he will have some suggestion to make. Yours very sincerely,"""
