$500,000 Suit Charges Illegal Sale of Dore Art

Suit for $500,000 damages was filed in United States District Court yesterday by John M. Holzworth, attorney, of Washington and New York City, against the Manhattan Storage and Warehouse Company, 801 Seventh Avenue.

The complaint charged that the defendants failed to carry out a written agreement which was made after Mr. Holzworth had offered a high bid of $12,500 for a Gustave Dore art collection which had been in storage with the defendants.

On October 28, 1947, the complaint alleged, "in violation of the contract and agreement, defendants declared sale to Mr. Holzworth to be revoked and without good legal cause or due notice did sell the Dore collection in an illegal and unlawful manner at individual bids and made delivery thereof."

The complainant valued the art collection at "not less than $500,000" and said that it "had been last previously sold in 1886 for $300,000."
