Dear Germain:

Thank you for your nice letter of May 30th. I am more than sorry to read the negative results of the Daumier business. As long as the Daumier watercolors are not in his lot, and should he be will to sell, and were you to tell me what is in his lot I could answer right away whether the effort would be worthwhile. Most of the paintings are better than gold bars provided one does not overpay for them. They would be salable even in the worst depression. I think I wrote it to you before, but in comparison to the other Daumiers, the Perls paintings have for me no interest whatsoever.

BALL, whom I met in the street, asked me whether I had an exceptional 15th or 16th century drawing.

Amongst the things that Leigh Block would be interested in, there are first drawings by Renoir, Degas, Seurat (but here they want a girl with a big dress or I translate, at least a personage), Chardin "Still Life" (They do not want a rabbit. To my feeling they would just as soon buy personages by Chardin). Although I have heard that the Henry de Rothschild paintings had disappeared in the bombardment of London, it is not absolutely impossible that by one chance or another, they would have an important Chardin. Any other idea you might have would be welcome. They also want an important Boudin, oil, watercolor, or drawing: Naturally they want crinolines on a beach.

Do you know by chance who handles the Cook paintings. It might be of the greatest interest.
