Shipments from France
I am enclosing two drafts of affidavits to be established in connection with the shipments to New York of the painting of the school of Fontainebleau which is our property and the paintings by Cima and the Champaigne which belong to Gersel. You will notice that I stated in Gersel's affidavit that such items were their outright property even though there are certain other interests to be considered "see item #11 of the Paris file you took along with you". In this connection I wish to inform you that M.C.R. told me that his wife had, during the past few years, made three important shipments from Paris to New York, most of them consisting of property (works of art) of her own, but including, however, certain items which belonged to others, that to his recollection she never filed any affidavits in this respect and effected shipment simply by turning them over to her packers with instructions to forward them to her New York address, who attended to this work without any difficulties. It is highly probable, of course, that said packers "greased somebodies palm", but if such procedure should be factual, it certainly would simplify our problem.
