Dear Mr. Seligman,

Yesterday I took a trip up to the Metropolitan to see whether the little girl had been hung yet, as nothing appeared in the morning newspapers. I walked about the galleries, hoping to find it without asking, but no luck; I then asked at the information desk, saying I "understood" (!) they had a new Vermeer. The poor girl was astonished, to say the least! She finally allowed that, as a matter of fact, there was a new Vermeer which was going to be exhibited on loan later on in the week, but that it would not be hung until the day the publicity was released--this so the news would not leak out ahead of time and so all the publications would receive it at the same time. Then, in order to throw her off the track in case she would be suspicious of spying, I asked where the Lansdowne Room was and took myself off to have a look at that.

So that is all we can know until the news appears in the newspapers, and we shall, of course, let you know as soon as it does.

Sincerely,
Sally Winter
