NATIONAL GALLERY WASHINGTON The Following letter received:

"After you telephoned to me yesterday I had indication that everything is going to work out all right about the Courbet. This is not the final decision but I thought you would want to send the encouraging news to Mr. Seligman.
 With best regards,
 Sincerely yours,
 (Signed) John Walker
I am not cabling you because of its uncertainty.

MAGGS
Maggs cables as follows:
"MANUSCRIPT EIGHTYTWO ALMOST CERTAINLY SOLD DELAYING RETURNING MAY WE HOLD ANOTHER WEEK DUE SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
MAGGS"

and it seems wiser to let them have the extension than to ask the manuscripts return as by that time Mr. Coop may have left and we have no way of knowing what his offer would be anyway. I cabled reply: "DO HOLD MANUSCRIPT ANOTHER WEEK
SELIGMANN"
[] I think it was wise - or let us hope so anyway - []

Copy of letter herein confirming cabled extension

SCHLENOFF Mr. Schlenoff called. He had not come in yesterday and as you already know, I was with the three gentlemenfrom Toronto when he came on Monday. Schlenoff is sailing today and therefore wants the matter to await his return. I reminded him that we will be reserving the pair of Davids for Indiana but he said he would just be taking his chances on the outcome.

[] O.K. - Your letter to Gilbert is fine - do keep notes of these matters
