Dear Mr. Sawyer:

Do have my thanks for your pleasant letter of September 29. In view of the continued interest shown by your Executive Committee in my painting by Thomas COUTURE - "Portrait de Baron Paul PĂ©rionon" - I shall be happy, of course, to forward it on approval for your meeting of October 21.

May I assume that if it is air-expressed on October 13 it would be satisfactory - unless you wished to receive it at an earlier date. As per your request, you will be notified as to the air line and flight number.

Answering your query as regards the insurance - it will remain fully covered by my Firm while in your Museum's custody and in transit both ways, at its selling price which is, you will recall, $10,000 (TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS).

Furthermore, I do appreciate your proposition of reimbursing the charges should the portrait not become part of your permanent collection, as I do hope.

However, in the meantime, I thought it might be agreeable to you to have on hand the pamphlet containing all data referring to the canvas. You will notice from it that it was considered the assumed portrait of Stendhal until I was able to establish the identity of the sitter without doubt. Moreover, you will remember that it had been, most probably, in an oval frame .. which is only noticeable when the painting is looked at from a certain angle.

I am thus looking forward to your further good news and with best personal regards,

Sincerely,

Germain Seligman
