Average number to the teacher 59 +
Private Schools 10
Aggregate of Pupils 443

School building owned by Freedmen 27
School buildings furnished by Bureau 27

Pupils in night schools are not included in the above aggregate.

Plantation School's are springing up in many localities, the pupils in which would very considerably increase the number above shown to be receiving instruction in the State, but as these are not regularly reported they are not embraced in the terms of the Superintendent.

Considerable progress has been made during the month on the part of the Freedmen in purchasing lots and in the erection thereon of comfortable School Houses. Several such buildings have been commenced and would soon be completed. This effort on their part to establish permanent schools for their children, not only aids materially in extending our present work, but is a sure ground of hope, that hereafter, when the aid of Government and the charities of the benevolent shall cease, they will go forward patiently and successfully laboring for a good system of Common schools
