Robert J Smith Sub Asst Comr Sub Dist of Opelika comprising 5 counties 3 of which have numerous colored population, reports three Day schools in progress. 4 School houses, one visit to schools, 10 destitute neighborhoods of 100 pupils each, the people very poor and dependent, Impossible to organize his Sub Dist into effective school Districts, - 
Sentiment openly hostile to colored schools, thinks the best means of assisting would be to import teachers, and furnish books, and that they will need assistance until state becomes organized and prosperous. 

Eufaula
