Genl. Howard directs me to say that he wishes you to employ Miss Van Lew in some industrial school for the Freedmen in Richmond, if you can arrange, with her, a plan for the institution which will be in accordance with the wants of the people, and the duties devolved upon the Bureau.

His repeated interviews with Miss Van Lew have made an impression in favor of her aptitude for some such work.  Your own judgement will decide as to what she can do best.
