DECLARATION FOR ARREARS OF PAY AND BOUNTY. 

State of Virginia 
County of Elizabeth City

On this 23rd day of March, 1868, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public in and for the County and State aforesaid, Benjamin Allen of Slabtown, in the County of Elizabeth City, and State of Virginia, who, being duly sworn, declares that his age is (39) thirty nine years; that he is the same Benjamin Allen who was a Private in Company K, commanded by Captain S. B. Heusted, in the 37th Regiment of  U.S. Colored Troops, who was honorably discharged from the service of the United States at Raleigh North Carolina, on or about the Eleventh day of February, 1867, by reason of S.O. No. 4. War Department, A. G. O. Jan. 05. 1867. 

He makes this declaration to recover from the United States One Hundred ($100.00) Dollars Bounty retained under G. O. 0 Series 1864. Hd. Qr. Dept. Va. [[?]]., 

[[strikethrough]]And he does further declare that he has not bartered, sold, assigned, transferred, loaned, exchanged, or given away his final discharge papers, or any interest in the pay or bounty provided by any act of Congress; and he hereby appoints WILLIAM FOWLER, Brevet Major, and A.A.G., Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, or his successor in office, of Washington, D.C., as his lawful attorney, and authorizes him to present and prosecute this claim, and to receive and receipt for any orders or moneys that may be issued or paid in satisfaction thereof.[[/strikethrough]]

Also personally appeared before me Abel Reed and  Nicholas Claiborne, of the County of Elizabeth City, and State of Virginia, to me well known as credible persons, who, being duly sworn, declare that they have been for Three (3) years acquainted with the above named Benjamin Allen, who was a Private in Company K., of the 37th Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops, and know that the applicant is the identical person he represents himself to be; that they saw him sign the foregoing declaration; and that they have no interest whatever in this application.
