In reply to comm. of the 15th inst. states that he cannot fix upon a salary for Mr. Given until he has seen him & suggests that if Mr. G. is in Washington he be requested to visit Richmond.

Respectfully returned to the Asst. Commr. for Virginia with statement that all that is known at this office of Mr Given was obtained from his (Genl Brown's) private letter to the Commr. requesting his appointment. His present whereabouts is not known to the Commissioner.

If Genl Brown is satisfied that he is a suitable person for duty in this Bureau, and if his services are actually necessary, he will be appointed with such salary as may be recommended, if the appointment is requested in the usual way.
