City Point Va.
Aug. 24th 1868

Bvt Maj. J. R. Stone.
Petersburg, Va.

Sir:—

In reply to your letter of the 23rd inst. I would respectfully state that when the war broke out I was what is termed a last course "Medical Student." Graduated the following spring when I entered as Actg Asst. Surgeon. Was only relieved by Col. Simmons. Medical Director of this District. January 31st 1866 at Newport News Va. where I had been the previous year, and up to the above date in charge of the Post Hospital.

My service was nearly all in Hospital and most of it in Philadelphia.

At Newport News, after I was mustered out, I bought at least $150 00/100 worth of medicines, and gave it my service to prescribe the same to the colored people of that place without any compensation whatever. (over)
