I can learn - where it was possible to convict, they were found guilty;- in many cases apparently, as an example rather then in justice.

The Blacks feel a deep interest in the education of their children, and many schools would be supported, could colored teachers be procured at a small, yet living salary to organize and teach the same.

I saw more intemperance during the present holidays, than for any corresponding time since I have been on duty in the Bureau, I am glad to say however, that with a few exceptions, drunkness was confined to the whites.

There seems to be much regrett on the part of the Colored people, at the discontinuance of the Bureau, and a feeling of rejoicing on the part of many of the whites, at the result.- Yet the better class of the latter, feel, that an additional responsibility will rest upon their shoulders after this day.

God help the Freedmen in their rights, is the Prayer of your past co-worker in their behalf.

Very Respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
James Johnson
