Timborville Rockingham Co Va January 30th 1869

Honorable friend

You may no doubt think it strange in receiving a letter from one who has never had the extreme pleasure of an acquaintance with your honor.

by this you will learn that I have commenced teaching a school in a neighborhood where there are many poor families who are not even blest with the comforts of life. Parents are very poor yet have a number of children who possess an interesting and intelligent countenance from the ages varying from 8 to 15 & 16 years of age they certainly deserve the sympathy of every feeling Man or Woman I am sorry to forbid their attending school but have so far admitted them but find that the majority of them are unable to pay I have been teaching them 2 weeks and on Monday next expect some 7 or 8 who are in like indigent circumstances yet I have not the conscience to deprive them of that advantageous privilige When I reflect that most of our Presidents had only a limited education and carried out a very judicious administration I myself am a poor Man occasioned by hearing losses sustained by the Hanbey as who were the most extensive cattle & bank speculators in the U States said to be by Nicholas Biddle President of the U States bank. I received my order for the court of Four children from my esteemed friend Wm A Moncose 2nd auditor after drawing off my acpt dates of entrance ages dates of entrance books used qualified before my school commission and get an order from the treasurer for the money
I am not aware that you are the proper person to refer to but was advised by some of the Attorneys in Harrisburg that you could give me every satisfaction that I required if you are not the proper person to where I should apply I will be under many lasting obligations to your honor if you will ascertain all
