Commissioner, 42/44 General, I have the honor to submit the following report of the operations of Bureau Affairs for the month of January 1869 _ viz. The number of "Freedmen" aided by the Bureau during the past month was Four hundred and forty eight (448) all inmates of Howards Grove Hospital, Richmond, Va. The number of "Schools" in this District during the month was Two hundred and seventy eight (278). Of which number thirty one (31) were night schools. The number of "Teachers" was Three hundred and twenty three (323) of which One hundred and seventy two were white. The whole number of Scholars Fourteen thousand and eleven (14,011) with an average attendance of Eleven thousand six hundred and two (11,602). Howards Grove Hospital The number of "persons treated for sickness" was Two hundred and twenty one (221). The number remaining under treatment January 31st 1869 was one hundred and ninety four (194). The number of "Old persons" remaining at end of month was Fifty eight (58). The number of "Insane" remaining January 31st 1869 was Seventy one (71).
