General,
I have the honor to request information regarding applications for prize money. Gustavus [[Branch? Brauch?]], Colored, served as a Landsman on board the U.S. Steamer "Shenandoah" in 1864, when she captured the prizes "Cornubia," "Ella" and "Ella Annie" —

He has a certificate signed by the Acting Ensign and Master mate of the "Shenandoah" that he was on board that Steamer at the time she captured the prizes.

I would also respectfully ask if it is necessary for the application to be sworn to before an officer of the U.S. Navy well acquainted with Branch.

Also, the sections of the letter should be kept together, it is A.A.A.G. (Acting Assistant Adjutant General) not A.A.A.Y., and "do" and the double-quote symbol mean ditto and the indicated text should be repeated in the transcription. ---------- Reopened for Editing 2024-01-20 15:09:53
